Norman Sydney Townsley was born in Leicestershire on 05 July 1897. His parents were Arthur H and Beatrice A Townsley. He had one older brother, Donald J. .

During the first world war Norman enlisted in the Loyal North Lancashire Regiment and was a signaler in the 10th Battalion.

Norman married Jane Pennington in December 1920, in Chorlton, Lancashire and died in Conway, North Wales in June 1973.

His name appears to have been mistranscribed on the medal rolls as Townley. He was awarded the British War Medal and Allied Victory Medal meaning he didn’t serve overseas prior to January 1916.
