In the shade of the trees in the north part of S.S Mary and Nicholas churchyard in Littlemore, Oxfordshire is a CWGC headstone that reads 34902 Private E. Brooks, Loyal North Lancashire Regiment.

Ernest Brooks was the son of Henry R. Brooks and Mary Ann Brooks of 22 Vincent Road, South Tottenham, London. Ernest was born in Barnsbury, Islington and pre-war had worked as an ink bottler. His father was a brush maker.

During the first world war he served with the 13th (Home Service) Battalion of the Loyal North Lancashire Regiment until they disbanded in mid-1918. He then transferred to an agricultural Company of the Labour Corps with number 495620.

Ernest Brooks was 27 years when he died of pneumonia in the 3rd Southern General Hosptial in Oxford on 14th November 1918. This was three days after the Armistice.

His family requested the following words be inscribed on the headstone;

‘Never shall thy memory fade round the spot where thou art laid’

Rank: Private
Service No: 34902
Date of Death: 14/11/1918
