poppyOn this day one hundred years ago two men of the 1st Battalion, The Loyal North Lancashire Regiment, died of wounds (DOW) and a third man died (D) of an unknown cause (although possibly by sniper fire) in France. All three men were buried in BOULOGNE EASTERN CEMETERY.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, We will remember them.

 1st Battalion

Battalion War Diary

9th November 1914 -Remained in trenches until 10.30 PM when we were relieved by the West Riding Regt. The day was fairly quiet except for a little shelling and the snipers who managed to kill one man and wound three. The strain on the men has been terrible and the way they have borne it is deserving of all praise. We returned to the wood, east of HOOGE, and remained there in Reserve for the remainder of the night.

Pte. John Swain Theobald is my Great Great Uncle. We’ve pieced some of his story together. Some of my relatives visited his grave in Boulogne. Thank you for this additional information. Are they any during photographs of his Battalion? 1st Battalion Loyal North Lancashire Regiment?
