On this day: 4th April 1915
On this day one hundred years ago one man of the 1st Battalion, Loyal North Lancashire Regiment was found drowned in France.
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, We will remember them.
Private Joseph McVAY was the son of the late James McVay; and husband of Mary McVay of 107, Hodson Place, Everton. He sailed to France to reinforce the 1st Battalion on 4th January 1915 and exactly three months later he was found drowned in the canal between Cuinchy and Givenchy. The day before, Private Frederick Patrick GARRITY had been found in the canal further up the line – it is possible these two deaths were linked.
